Overview

Founded in 1986, Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry is a non-profit public higher education institution located in Nauni, Himachal Pradesh. Officially accredited/recognized by the University Grants Commission, India, Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry is a coeducational higher education institution. Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. International students are welcome to apply for enrollment. Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, as well as administrative services.

Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry in district Solan, Himachal Pradesh, India is the first university of its kind in Asia with an exclusive mandate of education, research and extension in horticulture and forestry. People usually use the short form of the university name: Dr. Y S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry or by the initials YSP UHF.

It covers 5.5 km² and is situated in Nauni on the Solan-Rajgarh Road. The campus lies 15 km from the town of Solan.

The university was established on 1 December 1985 and is named after the first Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. This university was inaugurated by the late Rajiv Gandhi, Prime Minister of India, on 30 April 1988.

MISSION

Admission to B.Sc. (Hons) Horticulture, B.Sc. (Hons) Forestry and B.Sc. (Hons) Biotechnology (4 year programme) is made through an Objective Type Entrance Test. 85% of the total seats are reserved for domicile of Himachal Pradesh and are filled through Entrance Test conducted by the university. The remaining 15% of the total seats are filled through nomination by ICAR on the basis of All India Entrance Test conducted by ICAR, New Delhi. Over and above the intake capacity, few seats are reserved for nominees of North East Council (NEC). There are some self-financing seats available


Minimum Qualification

B.Sc. (Hons) Horticulture, Forestry, Biotechnology Program:

10+2/equivalent examination with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology/ Mathematics/ Agriculture from a recognized Board/ University with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks (45% marks in case of SC/ST candidates) in the above subjects.

or

Examination of a University/Board/College/School in a foreign country recognized by the Academic Council as equivalent to 10+2 with science subjects provided the candidate has obtained at least 60% aggregate marks or ‘B’ grade/equivalent.

General Conditions/Instruction for admission:

  1. The prescribed minimum marks in all the programs shall be relaxed by 5% in the case of SC/ST candidates and in service nominees.
  2. The candidate must bring all the original certificates on the day of registration.
  3. The nominees/sponsored candidates are exempted from the Entrance Test.

Reservation of Seats

Admission shall be subject to the reservation of seats as under:

  1. 85% of the total seats shall be reserved for domicile of Himachal Pradesh; and 22.5% of the seats in category (a) above shall be reserved for SC (15%) and ST (7.5%). In case candidates in either of the two categories are not available the seat(s) will be interchangeable.
  2. 15% of the total seats are filled up through an All India Entrance Examination conducted by the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) New Delhi.
  3. The following seats shall be over and above the intake capacity:
    • One seat each in B Sc (Hons) Horticulture, College of Horticulture, Nauni and B Sc (Hons) Forestry, College of Forestry, Nauni for the wards of serving/ ex-defence personnel.
    • One seat each in B Sc (Hons) Horticulture, College of Horticulture Nauni and B Sc (Hons) Forestry, College of Forestry, Nauni for the wards of serving/ retired CAPFs personnel.
    • One seat each in all the undergraduate programmes for single girl child.
    • Two seats each in B Sc (Hons) Horticulture, College of Horticulture Nauni, BSc (Hons) Forestry, College of Forestry, Nauni and one seat each in B Sc (Hons) Horticulture, B Sc (Hons) Forestry & B Sc (Hons) Biotechnology at College of Horticulture & Forestry, Neri for candidates belonging to IRDP/ BPL families of HP.
    • One seat each in all the undergraduate programmes for candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes (excluding creamy layer) of Himachal Pradesh.
    • One seat each in B Sc (Hons) Horticulture, College of Horticulture, Nauni and B Sc (Hons) Forestry, College of Forestry, Nauni for Physically challenged.
      NOTE: The benefit of reservation shall be availed by the candidates having permanent disability (PH) of not less than 40% (low vision, hearing impairment, locomotor disability or cerebral palsy) whosoever is found suitable by the admission committee, provided the candidate is otherwise fit for admission. The candidates will be required to perform field operations, activities pertaining to Horticulture/ Forestry and allied disciplines.
  4. The following seats shall be filled over and above the intake capacity as per the nominations from the respective Council/ department without entrance test:-
    1. Four seats each in B Sc (Hons) Horticulture, College of Horticulture, Nauni and B Sc (Hons) Forestry, College of Forestry, Nauni for nominees of North Eastern Hill Council (NEC).
    2. Three seats in B Sc (Hons) Horticulture for Horticulture Extension Officers of HP Horticulture Department in the College of Horticulture.
    3. Three seats in B Sc (Hons) Forestry for forest field staff of HP Forest Department each in College of Forestry, Nauni and College of Horticulture & Forestry, Neri (Hamirpur)

Academics

It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses in horticulture, forestry and allied disciplines.

Dr. Y S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry has three colleges: the College of Horticulture, the College of Forestry, and the College of Horticulture and Forestry Neri(Hamirpur) which are subdivided into 14 departments and are looked after by a faculty of over 500 scientists and teachers. It has a school specialized in the study of apples, called Apple School, Nauni. The department of management is under the college of horticulture providing degree in three basic courses: Marketing, Finance, and Human Resources with agribusiness.

Admission to 75% of the total seats are reserved for the domiciles of Himachal Pradesh and shall be filled by the University on the basis of merit of the qualifying degree plus written test i.e., on the basis of combined merit of written test plus OGPA/ percentage of marks obtained in the qualifying degree on 50: 50 basis. The remaining 25% of the total seats are filled through nomination by ICAR on the basis of All India Entrance Test conducted by ICAR New Delhi.

All the eligible applicants seeking admission for normal as well as self-financing seats are required to appear in CMAT conducted by Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla in the month of May every year.

NOTE: Based on their performance in the respective written tests, candidates would be short listed for Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI) to be conducted by this University.

  • MBA (Agribusiness): B Sc Horticulture/ Forestry/ Agriculture/ Agricultural Engineering/B V Sc/Graduate in other allied fields with an OGPA of 5.50/10.00 (5.00/10.00 in case of SC/ST category candidates) or its equivalent under course credit system or with a minimum of 55% marks (50% marks in case of SC/ST category candidates) under annual system from a recognized University or degree from a foreign University with atleast `B’ grade or its equivalent.
  • MBA: Graduate in any discipline with a minimum of 55% marks (50% marks in case of SC/ST category candidates) under annual system or with an OGPA of 5.50/10.00 (5.00/10.00 in case of SC/ST category candidates) or its equivalent under course credit system from a recognized University or degree from a foreign University with atleast `B’ grade or its equivalent.

 


Admission Procedure

(A) Written Test

All the eligible applicants are required to appear in the CMAT conducted by Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.

(B) Group Discussion and Personal Interview

The final selection is based on the candidate’s overall performance in the Written Test (CMAT), Group Discussion & Personal Interview.
