Yogi Vemana University Kadapa

Founded in 2006, Yogi Vemana University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the the rural setting of the small city of Kadapa (population range of 250,000-499,999 inhabitants), Andhra Pradesh. Officially accredited/recognized by the University Grants Commission, India, Yogi Vemana University (YVU) is a small (enrollment range: 5,000-5,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Yogi Vemana University (YVU) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 11 years old H.E. institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations. The admission rate range is 30-40% making this Indian higher education organization a very selective institution. YVU also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, as well as administrative services.

History

Late Dr. Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh donated his 312 acres (1.26 km2) of land to build West Campus. A modern concept school, which is called a 21st-century gurukul. The university is named after Yogi Vemana, who is known for his philosophical teachings and practicing Achala Paripurna Raja Yoga. Children are taught his teachings and poems at school as part of regular syllabus and moral science at schools.

This university was known earlier as Sri Venkateswara University PG Centre, Kadapa. This PG centre at Kadapa was established as a constituent institute of Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati on 20 November 1977.

It was upgraded as Yogi Vemana University by the Government of Andhra Pradesh through an Act of A.P. Legislative Assembly on 9 March 2006. Arjula Ramachandra Reddy, an eminent biologist, was the first vice-chancellor of Yogi Vemana University, Kadapa.

The Yogi Vemana University, semi-residential in character, has unitary status and potential for phenomenal academic growth in the disciplines of Modern Sciences and Technologies, Humanities and social Sciences in the years to come.

As an Emerging Premier State Varsity dedicated to Teaching, Research and Service Yogi Vemana University came into existence by the Act of the Andhra Pradesh State Legislative Assembly with effect from March 9th 2006. It is located 15 km away from Kadapa city on the Kadapa-Pulivendula Road.

Botanical Garden

The Yogi Vemana University Botanic Garden is basically intended to educate the students, researchers and common man about plant biodiversity and its importance in human well-being. Botanic garden is living repository of indigenous exotic, cultivated and wild plants. It is a place where a wide variety of plants are cultivated for scientific, educational, and ornamental purposes. It also includes a library, a herbarium, and green houses. At present, the Botanic garden enriched with more than 500 living species and more than 2000 individual plants. The total botanical garden is spreading about 19 acres in the YVU Campus

Butterfly Park

Darwin’s Butterfly Park & Museum first of its kind in Andhra Pradesh was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Arjula Ramachandra Reddy along with the other Universities Vice-Chancellors on 8th July 2010. It was established by Dr. S.P. Venkata Ramana, Asst. Professor of the Department of Zoology. It has a collection of nearly 400 butterflies belonging to 23 species displaying in a mosoic of various colours and hues. In the Museum more than 70 species along with life cycles were displayed in beautiful boards. Nearly 14 Television channels telecasted programmes the Park & Museum.

Super Computing Facilities

For the first time in India, and experimental, the theoretical and modeling activities of ‘semi-arid-zonal Atmospheric Research Centre (SARC) is established in Aug. 2008 under a memorandum of understanding with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Bengaluru at SARC high performance computers with 20 TB is storage is installed for weather forecast and also allied science applications. Modern meteorological remote sensors are deployed to under-stand monsoon, thunderstorm and climate change.

OTHER FACILITIES
Bank

The banker of the university is the State Bank of India. It has its ATM facility near new administrative building. The staff and the students have the facility to operate the regular transactions and also online banking. All financial transactions of University are carriedout with the help of SBI.

Canteen

The university has a canteen named as “Oasis”, and partially subsidized and is run by a contractor. It provides a choice of snacks, tea, coffee, cool drinks, breakfast and lunch. Two other cafeterias, one at Library and other one a mobile canteen will be made available shortly.

Engineering Section

The Engineering department is responsible for construction of several buildings and also civil and electrical repair/maintenance. English Language Communication Skills Laboratory with 50 workstations established and attached to Department of English. The laboratory is launched to provide a platform for the university students to enhance their language proficiency. It is also proposed to offer ‘English Proficiency Course’ to the students of other colleges by fixing nominal fee.

Guest House

The new Guest House of the university is a modern, two-storied building located just behind the Pulivendula-Kadapa main road. Apart from 53 rooms, 4 suites are available and two among them are 2 air-conditioned, the Guest House has a sixty seater committee room and a large Dining Hall attached with a conference hall. The office of the In-Charge of the Guest House is located on the ground floor. Also on the ground floor is a visitors’ lounge cum reading room where guests can spend their leisure time. For the hostels and all university buildings, safe drinking water facility is also provided in the premises of the Guest House. A water purifying plant is installed in the hostel.

Health Centre

First-Aid and medicine for some emergency cases are provided for students and staff. The Health Centre provides outpatient treatment both in the morning and evening. The services of a Medical Officer and Para-Medical Personnel are utilized. The emergency cases are treated and transferred within 20 minutes to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Kadapa for better treatment by university ambulance.

Post Office

Indian Postal Department established a Branch Post Office in the University campus for the last several years. Professional Courier Facility also available in this campus.

Sports and Physical Activity

University Physical Education and Sports Department offers a wide range of sports services for students and staff. It established a modern fitness centre with 16-station multi-gymnasium and also established several play-grounds for different sports activities.

Transport Facilities

The University provides conveyance facility commuting from Kadapa city to the campus and back. The University owned buses and two vans are utilized for transportation. There is a special transport facility for ladies and the staff.

Academics

Yogi Vemana University has at present 15 departments offering courses at post graduate level in 17 disciplines in Languages/ Humanities/Physical and Bio-Sciences, Human Resources Management, MBA & MCA and new sciences like Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Geoinformatics and Earth Sciences. The university has also introduced five-year integrated M.Sc. courses in Earth Sciences and Bioinformatics in the year 2007-08.

C.P. Brown Library with its rich collection of rare books, ancient documents and relics, situated in Kadapa is part of Yogi Vemana University providing research facilities in several disciplines.

Engineering campus

Yogi Vemana University College of Engineering, Proddatur was established in 2008-2009 and renamed as YSR Engineering College of Yogi Vemana University in the year 2010. It offers six conventional disciplines of Civil, Computer Science, Electronics & Communications, Information Technology, Mechanical and Electrical & Electronics Engineering leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Engineering. Along with the above the college is offered a new course in “Metallurgical Engineering” from the ensuing academic year.

There are six engineering courses in that college. Metallurgy and material technology (MMT), computer science engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electric and electronic engineering, electronics and communication engineering. The principal of this college is Prof. B. Jayarami Reddy.
