The definition of Trans-disciplinary (as per the Act)

The scope of the term Trans-Disciplinary is defined in the Institute of Trans-Disciplinary Health Science and Technology (TDU) Act as the Indian traditional health sciences and other systems of knowledge including; Biomedicine, life sciences, social sciences, environment studies, design, architecture, performing and fine arts, engineering and management and policy studies.

Therefore students from all disciplines implied in the definition are eligible to join the Ph D Program.

The nature of research encouraged in TDU

One of the key goals of TDU is the creation of new transdisciplinary / multidisciplinary / interdisciplinary knowledge in traditional health sciences, basic sciences, clinical, pharmacological, pharmaceutical, biomedicine, life sciences, environment studies, design architecture, performing and fine arts, engineering, technology, management and social sciences. Hence TDU encourages research related to knowledge generation, knowledge dissemination and knowledge application in these fields. Research related to knowledge generation is the conventional focus of research in most Universities. TDU, however, will also support research related to design of dissemination strategies including the use of information technology and also action-research related to knowledge application, through well designed experimental outreach programs.

Program Overview

The Master of Science by Research (MScR) is a research-oriented Master’s program offered to students with demonstrated research aptitude at The Institute of Trans-Disciplinary Health Sciences and Technology (TDU). Applicants with a bachelor’s degree interested in exploring in-depth research problems in any transdisciplinary domain offered at TDU or its partner research institutions may apply.

Transdisciplinary domains offered at TDU or its partner research institutions include Indian Traditional Health Sciences, Biomedicine, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Environmental Studies, Design, Architecture, Performing and Fine Arts, Engineering, Management and Policy Studies.

This two year / four semesters, Master of Science by Research program involves a research work / project leading to the presentation of a thesis, which represents 50 Credits of the requirements of the course. The objective of this degree is training students in research methodology and techniques, in critical application (appropriate to the field of study) of such methodology, by conducting an approved program of research under appropriate supervision. The thesis will be based on original research of publishable quality. In certain disciplines, the thesis could be a creative production, installation, performance, etc that is approved by the Masters Research Committee (MRC).

The students will be required to successfully complete a minimum 25 credits of coursework in the first year. Coursework can be taken either at TDU, or at Partner Research Institutions or at any UGC recognised institutions.

The key differences of the Master of Science by Research as compared with other Master of Science program are:

The MScR program has atleast 50 credits of research to atleast 25 credits of coursework versus a 25/50 credits breakup in conventional Master of Science programs.
There are no fixed core courses. Instead each individual student is advised by his/her Research Supervisor to take courses needed for their research work.

Students are expected to identify their Research Supervisor from an approved list of supervisors either at TDU or Partner Research Institution.

The scope of research at TDU

The scope of the Master of Science by Research is to work on research in knowledge generation, dissemination and application in any topic related to “transdisciplinary sciences and technology”.

The scope of the term “Transdisciplinary” is defined as interfaces of multiple systems of knowledge including Indian Traditional Health Sciences, Biomedicine, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Environmental Studies, Design, Architecture, Performing and Fine Arts, Engineering and Management and Policy Studies.
