Location

Situated in the Shimla Hills, Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences has a sylvan campus on the Oachghat – Kumarhatti Road (Himachal State Highway 6) at an altitude of about 1500 meters. It is 15 km from Solan, 54 km from Chandigarh and 18 km from Dharampur. The University is easily approachable by road from Delhi, Chandigarh and Kalka. The nearest airport is at Chandigarh and Shimla, and the nearest broad gauge railway station is at Kalka, while the closest narrow gauge rail station is at Solan.

 


Under Graduate Programmes

B Tech Biotechnology

Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary science integrating biological sciences with engineering sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, mathematics, chemistry and physics. Biotechnology has applications in diverse fields such as medicine, agriculture, food technology, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, blood products, artificial organs, nutraceuticals, energy, pollution control, environment protection and waste management.

The mission of the School of Bioengineering and Food Technology is to “advance scientific knowledge through discovery and teaching” and we do well in both. We strive hard for quality production of trained human resource for job opportunities in bioscience based industries and research organizations. Our model is to blend expertise in biosciences with the principles and practices of business management and create skilled human resource for the leadership positions in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, healthcare and food processing industries. The duration is 4 years (8 semesters).

Eligibility

10 + 2 (PCM/ PCB); Lateral entry to 3rd Semester for Diploma holders in concerned or related subjects with minimum 55% marks.

Basis of Admission

  1. For students with PCM or PCB (with maths)-Through JEE or equivalent any state or national level entrance test, but with 55% marks in 10+2.
  2. For students with Biology (PCB only)-Through Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences Entrance Test, but with 60% marks in 10+

 

B Tech Food Technology

Food Technology is a multidisciplinary field of applied physical sciences, microbiology, process engineering, management, marketing for food and related industries. Food Technology includes, but is not limited to, the application of agricultural engineering, mechanical engineering and chemical engineering principles to food materials. Food Technology provides the technological knowledge transfer essential to the cost-effective production and commercialization of food products and services. The duration is 4 years (8 semesters).

Eligibility

10 + 2 (PCM/ PCB); Lateral entry to 3rd Semester for Diploma holders in concerned or related subjects with minimum 55% marks.

Biotechnology is an expanding and blooming field which unifies biology with technology. B.Sc Biotechnology program aims to provide a specialized education to young minds with aspirations in research in various areas of biotechnology including food, agriculture, and medicine. The course aims to produce skilled graduates with specialized knowledge in biotechnology. The outcome of the program is to produce graduates with multidimensional career outcomes, be it research, academia or industry.

B Sc (Hons) Microbiology

Microbiology is a specialized discipline that involves the study of the microbial world, including bacteria, viruses, protozoa and fungi. B.Sc Microbiology program aims to nurture young minds with aspirations in diverse areas of microbiology. A graduate in Microbiology will find career options in education, and research based on application of microbes in food, medicine, quality assurance, and biotechnological industries.

Duration: 6 semesters

B Sc (Hons) Food Science and Technology

Food Technology is a multidisciplinary and blooming field based on fundamental principles of basic sciences and engineering. The raw agriculture produce is converted into value added products for proper supply of food to society. It involves how new technologies may be developed, applications of developed technologies for proper processing and preservation of food products. B.Sc Food Technology includes, but is not limited to, the application of agricultural engineering, mechanical engineering and chemical engineering principles to food materials. Food Technology provides the technological knowledge transfer essential to the cost-effective production and commercialization of food products and services. The duration is 3 years (6 semesters).

Post Graduate Programmes

M Sc Biotechnology 

Biotechnology is the application of biological processes to commercial and industrial purposes. This stream of science has a wide scope and its impact on pharmaceutical, diagnostic, healthcare, agricultural, food and environmental sectors is continually on the rise. The objective of this course is to provide students with the skills, knowledge and experience that are needed to pursue a successful career in biotechnology. The programme is designed to expose students to recent and exciting developments in the area of genetic engineering and biotechnology and their exploitation in industry, agriculture and medicine.

M Sc Biotechnology  programme is of 4 semester duration. It combines course work with research and prepares students for careers as professional biotechnologists in industry, government, education, and research organizations, or for further professional training and research. Research forms part of the programme from the first semester. It is also a foundation for entry into M Phil or PhD.

Eligibility

B Sc with Biotechnology/Microbiology/ Biochemistry/ Life Sciences as one of the subject with at least 55% marks

M Sc Microbiology 

Microbes have played an important role in the large-scale chemical transformations (carbon, nitrogen and sulphur cycles) on this earth. Microbiology, the science of microorganisms, has contributed significantly in the development of biotechnology, biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology. Micro-organisms help in several industries like pharmaceutical industry, jute industry, food industry, etc. Hormones, vitamins, vaccines are also manufactured from microorganisms.

M Sc Microbiology  programme is of 4 semesters’ duration. It combines course work with research  and prepares students for careers as professional microbiologists/immunologists in industry, government, education, and research organizations, or for further professional training and research. Research forms  part of the programme from the first semester. It is also a foundation for entry into M Phil or PhD.

M Tech Biotechnology

Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary science integrating biological sciences with engineering sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, mathematics, chemistry and physics. Biotechnology has applications in diverse fields, such as medicine, agriculture, food technology, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, blood products, artificial organs, nutraceuticals, energy, pollution control, environment protection and waste management.

M Tech in Biotechnology is designed to provide students with a formal qualification in engineering at the master’s level. Biotech engineers focus on gene cloning, genomics and proteomics, and other basic molecular techniques. More specifically, this discipline looks at discovering and applying new biotechnology products to the problems we face, these engineers help to make all of our lives better day-by-day. Your aim as a biotechnology engineer is to harness biological systems as a way of producing new products. The duration is 2 years (4 semesters).

BE/B Tech Biotechnology OR M Sc Biotechnology/ Microbiology/ Biochemistry/ any other branch of Life Sciences; minimum marks 60%.

M Tech Food Technology

Food Technology is a multidisciplinary field of applied physical sciences, microbiology, process engineering, management, marketing for food and related industries. Food Technology includes, but is not limited to, the application of agricultural engineering, mechanical engineering and chemical engineering principles to food materials. Food Technology provides the technological knowledge transfer essential to the cost-effective production and commercialization of food products and services.

M Tech Food Technology course helps for planning and managing a production process from raw materials of finished product taking food safety and quality in to account. The duration of the course is 2 years (4 semesters).

Eligibility

BE/B Tech Food Technology/ Agriculture/ Biotechnology OR M Sc Biotechnology/ Microbiology/ Biochemistry/ any other branch of Life Sciences; minimum marks 60%.

Basis of Admission

Through Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences entrance Test or GATE followed by Personal Interview.

 

M Sc Food Technology

M Sc. Food Technology is a unique program designed to cater the needs of food processing industry. It involves a unique blend of design and management of products, processes and services. The program aims at promoting innovations in food sector and catalyzing the growth of Food Processing Industry in India in global context. Apart from imparting world-class education in the field of food technology, the program also aims research in frontline areas of Food Technology. The program has a network of inspiring as well as dedicated scientists who have fascination to pursue in-depth research and development in the areas of food technology. The present scenario in the country is very vibrant with rising capital investment in food industry, which is expanding at a rapid pace in urban markets for processed foods. The students are exposed to advanced lean manufacturing and operation optimizing techniques. The idea of the program is to impart the knowledge of perishable and non-perishables, with emphasis on reducing the losses incurred in current scenario. Also, it helps in understanding the importance of quality, price, and shelf life of products. It imparts basic food knowledge at every level from farm to retail.
