OVERVIEW
Founded in 1957, Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya (Rani Durgavati University) is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the the urban setting of the large city of Jabalpur (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants), Madhya Pradesh. Officially accredited/recognized by the University Grants Commission, India, Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya (RDVV) is a coeducational higher education institution. Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya (RDVV) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. International students are welcome to apply for enrollment. RDVV also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, housing, sport facilities and/or activities, online courses and distance learning opportunities, as well as administrative services.
University Profile
The University is privileged to have the blessings and good wishes of many important and distinguished Indians. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan delivered its first Convocation address on 1.3.1958 and blessed students and the institution. Similarly Dr. C.D. Deshmukh delivered the Convocation address on 16.11.1960, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri on 10.12.1961 and Dr. C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar on 15.2.1963. The first Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru inaugurated the administrative building of the university on July 11,1961. Prof. R. Chidambaram, the well known nuclear scientist was the Chief Guest at its convocation held on 28.2.2002, while Dr. J.S. Verma, former Chief Justice of India delivered the convocation address on 7th March, 2005. Hon’ble President of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Hon’ble Governor of the state Dr. Balram Jakhar, Hon’ble Chief Minister of the state Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Hon’ble Speaker of Legislative Assembly of the state Shri Ishwar Das Rohani were distinguished guests on the occasions of Golden Jubilee Ceremony and 21st Convocation of the University on October 12,2006.
Dr. Kunji Lal Dubey was the founder Vice-Chancellor of the University. Subsequently, distinguished academicians like Dr. Dhirendra Verma, Dr. Raj Bali Pandey and Dr. H.P. Dikshit adorned the post. Prof. H.P. Dikshit later became the Vice-Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi. Then, a good number of renowned academicians also taught in this University. Prof. T. Pati who later on became the Vice-Chancellor of Allahabad University, taught Mathematics with distinction. Prof. T.S. Murthy (Physics), Prof. R.K. Singh (Physics), Prof. S.C. Datt (Physics), Dr.C.D. Sharma (Philosophy), Prof. Baijnath Sharma (History), Prof. Hiralal Jain (Sanskrit) and Prof. S. Swaminathan (English) were also teachers in this University. Dr. Baijnath Sharma became the Vice-Chancellor of Bhopal University. Prof. Mahesh Datt Mishra, the living legend of Gandhian thoughts was a Professor teaching Political Science in the University. He now heads the Gandhi Srijan Peeth of the University.
The University has produced a large number of internationally acclaimed academicians and scientists, a number of distinctions and awards have been given to its teachers and students and many international fellowships have been bagged by the Faculty members. In the past 5 years, more than 300 research scholars have earned Ph.D. as well as D.Sc. and D. Litt. degrees. Various research Projects in different disciplines, with an outlay of around Rs. 5 Crores have been completed during this period. Currently several research projects are in progress. The University is thus playing a key role in higher education in Central India.
Rani Durgavati University (Hindi: रानी दुर्गावती विशवविधालय), also known as University of Jabalpur, is a government university in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India. It was named after the queen Rani Durgavati. It is the main university of this city and has been graded as B++ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
Campus
The university campus is spread over 99.63 acres (403,200 m2) of scenic beauty and environment-friendly surroundings. It accommodates an Administrative Block, Art Faculty building, Teaching and Research buildings of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Bio-Science, System Science and Physical education departments. It has a Central Library, Computer Center, USIC, University Institute of Management, University Law Department and other facilities like one boys’ and one girls’ hostels, University Health Center, University Guest House, Canteen and residential quarters. Other facilities like post office, bank and printing press are on the campus. It is, therefore, possible to say that the university campus is a city within the city of Jabalpur.
The UGC-Academic Staff College (Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Bhawan) is one of the best in the country. It has so far conducted 73 orientation programmes and 195 refresher courses. Over 7600 teachers have been benefited by these courses.
Notable faculty and academics
Dr. Kunji Lal Dubey, who subsequently became the speaker, Vidhan Sabha of M.P., was the first vice-chancellor of the university. Subsequently, distinguished academicians like Dr. Dhirendra Verma, Dr. Raj Bali Pandey and Dr. H. P. Dikshit adorned the post. Prof. H. P. Dikshit is the vice-chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi.
Rahas Bihari Dwivedi, former head of department of Sanskrit, was awarded with the President’s Certificate of Honour in Sanskrit in the year 2012.
Prof. T. Pati, who later on became the vice-chancellor of Allahabad University, taught Mathematics with distinction. Prof. T. S. Murty was founder professor of Physics, who became the Vice-Chancellor of Sagar University and later the founder Director General of M.P. Council of Science and Technology Bhopal; Prof. S. C. Datt (Physics), Dr. C. D. Sharma (Philosophy), Prof. Baijnath Sharma (History), Prof. Hiralal Jain (Sanskrit) and Prof. S. Swaminathan (English) were teachers. Dr. Baijnath Sharma became the vice-chancellor of Barkatullah University. Prof. Mahesh Datt Mishra, a prominent Gandhian thinker, was a professor of political science. He now heads the Gandhi Srijan Peeth of the University.
Rani Durgavati University has produced many internationally acclaimed academicians and scientists. 25 distinctions and awards have been given to its teachers and students and 24 international fellowships have been won by faculty members. In the past five years, 292 research scholars have won Ph.D. degrees and have earned D.Sc. and D. Litt. degrees. 62 research projects, with an outlay of Rs. 4.32 Crores have been completed during this period. Currently 39 research projects with a budgetary provision of Rs. 1.89 Crores are in progress.
