ABOUT US

National Institute of Technology Nagaland, an Institute of National importance is a higher education technical Institute located at Chumukedima (Dimapur), Nagaland. It is one among the ten newly approved NITs by the Government of India in 2009 under the 11th Five Year Plan and it started functioning from the academic year 2010. Initially, this Institute started its journey under the mentorship of National Institute of Technology Silchar in Assam. It functioned in the campus of NIT Silchar for two years. Land for permanent campus was identified for the Institute during January 2012 and it is located at a hilly terrain area at Chumukedima near Dimapur, Nagaland.

The first academic session of the Institute in its permanent campus started on 20th September 2012. The land of 291 acres (which had been originally allotted for the Office of the Deputy Commissioner) was handed over by the Government of Nagaland with few buildings to NIT Nagaland for the establishment of its permanent campus. The infrastructure for class rooms, hostels and dining blocks for Boys and Girls have been created with refurbishment of the existing RCC buildings and construction of a few pre-fabricated buildings. Pre-fabricated structures for new class room blocks, laboratories (Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Machines, Power Systems etc.) and hostels have been constructed.

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

It gives me immense pride to be part of first Institute of National Importance in the state of Nagaland. NIT Nagaland has been established for imparting technical education, to promote regional diversity and multicultural understanding in the state, where students can utilize their skills and proficiency, initiating them into prospective horizons, thereby finding a vocation in which each individual is best fit for. The nobility of the Institute has reframed the mindset of the people of Nagaland enabling them to rebuild a better society. NIT Nagaland has been raised the hopes of social welfare. Being a premier technological Institute of the state, it aims to promote the students of Nagaland by advocating scientific and technical pursuits in a rich resourced topography, which is an excellent measure of learning, understanding and employment.

The Institute strives to achieve academic excellence through dedication to duty, along with team spirit, commitment to research, innovation in learning with the state of the art technology resources to match the expectations of the industry and society.

        Research is an integral component of any educational programme. In order to do research in a meaningful manner, it is imperative to review the recent advances in the concerned subjects from time to time. The main purpose of attending International Seminars, holding conferences etc. is to have interactions with the scientists, mathematicians, engineers and management experts, and thus come to know about the advances made in the recent past in the broad areas of Engineering Sciences, Material Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Sustainable Development. This is expected to provide a boost to the research activities.

        The Institute has taken up challenges to create potential and productive research culture in the Institute in the process of which notable exercises are: introduction of Ph. D. programmes in Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics; organization of research conferences; and encouraging and sponsoring members of faculty to enrol as members of scientific & professional societies. In the process of bolstering the research activities, many faculty members have published research papers in leading national and international journals.

        The Institute is focused towards research and development from its inception period. The research activities are department-centric as well as inter-disciplinary. Several sponsored research projects are proposed by the faculty members and supported by various government and research organizations. These projects are also useful for partial infrastructural development and providing additional manpower during the project period. The outcome of the projects can be utilized in future for industrial and scientific development.


        Latest Technological Inputs

        The complete IT infrastructure with respect to Campus Networking has been completed during September 2014 with Video Conferencing facilities. All the students, research scholars can avail the facility to connect to the online video lecturers conducted in various reputed institutes across the globe. Later on, the NKN connectivity strength has been increased to 1 Gbps. The Institute has established the facilities for Video Conferencing to conduct classes of other renowned professors in remote and to view video lectures of NPTEL during the class.

        The Institute has also procured 1500 numbers of highly valuable online books from Wiley publications and Elsevier in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering and procured on-line access to e-journals and e-books from Elsevier and Springer. The Institute proposes to invite leading organizations such as IBM, Wipro and HP initially to set up Centre of Excellence, which houses advanced laboratories such as “Finishing Laboratories”, a HP initiative, “High Performance Computing”, an IBM initiative and “Mission 10X Technology Learning Centre”, an initiative by Wipro. This will be useful to students and faculty of NIT-Nagaland in all aspects of academic growth and this initiative will definitely bring Industrial collaboration and growth to the State of Nagaland.


        Laboratory Facilities for Research Work

        In order to provide the research facilities, the Institute has developed different research-oriented laboratory facilities for each individual department. The scholars can do inter-disciplinary work in any of the laboratories as mentioned below:

        • The laboratories such as Electrical Machines and Drives laboratory, Advanced Mobile Communication laboratory and VLSI design laboratory were built with state-of-the-art facilities in such a way that classes can be held for both the UG and PG courses. The facilities in the laboratories also have extensive scope for carrying out projects and research activities.
        • The Electrical Machines are low power machines to suit the condition of the earth. The machines are integrated with LabVIEW software to test and analyze the performance parameters.
        • The Electronics laboratory is established with Cadence software which is useful in understanding the chip design.
        • A research laboratory having various sensors and data acquisition systems is established to experiment and interact with real world.
        • State-of-the-art Power Systems Laboratory has been established which enables the Under-graduate, Post-graduate and Research scholars to enrich their knowledge by using SCADA and Mipower software. The prototypes for Generation, Transmission and Distribution of power are available to study the system performance in a practical manner. Science and Humanities

Training & Placement Cell (T & P Cell)


As an Institute of National Importance, National Institute of Technology Nagaland always concerns about its strong visionary objectives. Our Institution inculcates the very idea of preparing students to face various technical and nontechnical issues. Establishment of Training and Placement Cell was a part of this mission so as to provide students with the platform to compete and succeed in the imperiousness and competitiveness of global world. Activities of Training and Placement Cell centre on making strong relationship with Industries and to exploit the relationship for personality and skill development of the graduating students through various interactive programmes. In this regard the Industry Institute Conclave organized during 12th & 13th February 2014 was a landmark event for the Institute.

Training and Placement Cell strives to provide the best possible training and placement opportunities for the students. Students of NIT Nagaland are receiving summer training in reputed Industries and PSUs as well as in top level academic institutes like IITs. As a result of constant endeavour by the members of Training and Placement Cell under the guidance of honourable Director, Institute has succeeded in obtaining overwhelming response from various recruiters last year. Amidst many challenges in various fronts, about 70% of students from first batch were able to receive placement in various reputed Industries like National Instruments, Polaris, Verizon, Aricent, IBM and many more. Apart from this one student has succeeded in receiving Singapore government presidential fellowship for continuing his Ph D at Singapore University of Technology and Development (SUTD), Singapore. Even from the present batch of final year students, few students have already received placement in companies like ‘Polaris Financial Solutions’ and ‘National Stock Exchange Infotech Services Limited (NSEIL), Mumbai. Training and Placement Cell looks forward for stronger collaboration with Industries so that deserving students can get the best platform to nurture their talents and improve their credibility for better placement prospects. Currently T&P Cell is working on framing out newer policies to strengthen Industry – Institute relationship so as to attract more and more number of companies.

Message from the Director’s Desk     The Training and Placement Cell of NIT Nagaland is established with the vision to impart knowledge and higher professional education with equal opportunity to all through intensive and innovative training methodologies. The aim of the Training and Placement Cell is to train the students in all areas of Science and Technology, upgrade their soft skills and technical skills in the core thrust areas so that they will equip themselves and become globally competitive. The primary objective is to have campus placement and focus on strong interaction between Institute, Industry, Students and Faculty to share the potential knowledge and innovative ideas of recent developments. I appreciate the team spirit of the students involved in the training and placement activities and wish them all success in their future career.

Message from the Placement Coordinator      Training and Placement cell, NIT Nagaland started functioning from November 2012 with a basic

goal to ensure placement for all the graduating final year students. It also strives to guide the remaining students in achieving their career objectives through adequate personality and skill development programmes. It is indeed a great challenge to create a strong hold for NIT Nagaland in global panorama.

And I feel very glad to see that amidst the growing challenges, the team of dedicated students relentlessly working towards achieving the core objectives. The enthusiastic attitude of the students is impressive thus far and I believe that such generous efforts will definitely bring forth dividends. I envision that within a very short period NIT Nagaland will achieve global recognition and will become one of the most preferred institutes for national and international recruiting agencies.

The pool of faculties who are constantly guiding the students of NIT Naga-land in all their constructive endeavours, are a strong support towards achieving the core objectives. Students, faculties and administration all need to work collectively to ensure that all the aspiring students have the right job at hand before leaving the institute. My hope is that student community will also have the opportunity to get introduced to the best technological innovations in the world.
