OVERVIEW
Established in 1998, Maulana Azad National Urdu University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the the urban setting of the metropolis of Hyderabad (population range of over 5,000,000 inhabitants), Telangana. Officially accredited/recognized by the University Grants Commission, India, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) is a coeducational higher education institution. Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 19 years old H.E. institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment. MANUU also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, online courses and distance learning opportunities, as well as administrative services.
Maulana Azad National Urdu University (Urdu: مولانا آزاد قومی اردو جامعہ, Hindi: मौलाना आज़ाद नेशनल यूनिवर्सिटी) is a Central University located in the city of Hyderabad in the Indian state of Telangana. It was named after Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, India’s first Minister of Education, a freedom fighter in India’s struggle for independence, and a scholar of Islam and Urdu literature. The university was established by an Act of the Parliament in January 1998, with an All India jurisdiction. The university has been awarded “A” Grade by National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC).
Objectives of the University
- to promote and develop the Urdu language
- to impart education and training in vocational and technical subjects through the medium of Urdu
- to provide wider access to people desirous of pursuing programmes of higher education and training in Urdu medium through Campus and Distance modes &
- to provide focus on women education.
Chancellor
Zafar Sareshwala was appointed chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University on 2 January 2015.

The university has an Urdu learning and research institution, the Centre for Urdu Language, Literature & Culture at its Hyderabad campus.
MANUU has started polytechnic colleges in Hyderabad, Bangalore and Darbhanga. MANUU’s I.T.I.’s are working at Hyderabad, Bangalore and Darbhanga. It has established model schools in Hyderabad and Darbhanga.
In addition to the above-mentioned institutions, the university has four Colleges of Teacher Education in Hyderabad, Bhopal, Darbhanga and Srinagar. N.T.S. (Mysore) has recently established its field unit at the MANUU campus in the Gachibowli section of Hyderabad.
Directorate of Distance Education
Directorate for Distance Education (DDE) initiated its distance education programmes from 1998 by offering B.A. in Urdu medium initially. All the courses of DDE were approved by the then Distance Education Council, New Delhi. The DDE has set up nine Regional Centers (Delhi, Patna, Bangalore, Bhopal, Darbhanga, Srinagar, Kolkatta, Mumbai, Ranchi) and five Sub-Regional Centers (Hyderabad, Lucknow, Jammu, Nuh and Amravati) to provide academic and administrative support to the students. The RCs and SRCs take care of student support services; management of Study Centres; and admission process. At present there are 161 Study Centres in the purview of these RCs/SRCs all over the country.
The university has signed MoUs with Doordarshan for imparting lessons to the students through audio visual media. Further, the DDE is endeavouring to achieve its goal of providing online admission facility; simple process of admission to facilitate the students and providing audio visual material to the students along with the self-learning material. The distance education programmes are popular with a large number of students across the country and abroad.
In coordination with the Consulate General of India, MANUU started its Examination Centre at Jeddah (KSA) in 2006. The graduation, post-graduation and diploma certificates awarded by the university are at par with the certificates of other Central Universities. Day-by-day the strength of the students is growing; students enrolled as on date are 1,57,000. Thus, the DDE is striving hard to reach the unreached. According to a recent survey by the renowned weekly Outlook the university’s distance education programmes are ranked at sixth place in the merit list of top 30 national level institutions in the country.
The Directorate of Distance Education is offering 17 programmes through distance mode including three PGs (M.A.in Urdu, History, English & Islamic Studies), four UG (B.A., B.Com., B.Sc. and B.Ed.), two PG diplomas (Museology, Tourism Management), two diplomas (in Journalism & Mass Communication, in Teach English) and four Certificate programmes (Food & Nutrition, Proficiency in Urdu through English, Proficiency in Urdu through Hindi, Functional English for Urdu Speakers).
Facilities
The university is home to the Maulna Azad Library, which was established in 1998.The library subscribes to 27 periodicals in Urdu, 129 in English, nine in Hindi and 20 popular magazines apart from 13 newspapers in Urdu, English, Telugu and Hindi
