Overview

Founded in 1991, Makhanlal Chaturvedi Rashtriya Patrakarita Vishwavidyalaya (Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication) is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the the urban setting of the large city of Bhopal (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants), Madhya Pradesh. This institution has also branch campuses in the following location(s): Noida, Khandwa. Officially accredited/recognized by the University Grants Commission, India, Makhanlal Chaturvedi Rashtriya Patrakarita Vishwavidyalaya (MCRPS) is a large (enrollment range: 10,000-14,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Makhanlal Chaturvedi Rashtriya Patrakarita Vishwavidyalaya (MCRPS) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. MCRPS also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, sport facilities and/or activities, as well as administrative services.

  1. Makhanlal Chaturvedi Rashtriya Patrakarita Vishwavidyalaya, Bhopal , was set up by Act Number 15 of 1990 of the Legislative Assembly of Madhya Pradesh. The University is named after Makhanlal Chaturvedi, a renowned Freedom Fighter, Poet and Journalist.
  2.  This University was formally inaugurated by Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, the then Vice President of India, on 16th January, 1991.
  3. The University is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
  4. It is not an Open University providing Distance Education. It does not provide education through correspondence.
  5. It is not a Conventional University having limited territorial jurisdiction. It has jurisdiction through out the country. Consistent with the recent trend of globalisation and internationalisation of education, the University is imparting education outside the country also.
  6. In keeping with its national character :-
    1. The Vice President of India is the Visitor of the University
    2. The General Council of the University, which is its Apex Body, comprises, amongst others, the following:-
    3. A member of the Lok Sabha, nominated by the Speaker of Lok Sabha
    4. A member of the Rajya Sabha, nominated by the Chairperson of Rajya Sabha
    5. Chairman of the Press Council of India
    6. Ten members representing different States of the country. Five of them are nominated by Chief Ministers of respective States. The remaining five are representatives of five Indian languages
    7. Three members representing three All India Professional Bodies.
    8. Five professionals from various parts of the country.
  7. The University aims at developing excellent professionals with social commitment.
  8. The University imparts education through :-
    1. Its Teaching Departments at Bhopal
    2. Its campuses at Noida, which is now for all practical purposes, a part of Delhi; and at Khandwa
    3. Network of Study Institutes spread over the whole country
  9. These Study Institutes are run by non-profit Societies & Trusts which are registered under the relevant laws.
  10. The relationship between the University and its Study Institutes comes closest to, and can be best described as, that existing between a Conventional University and its Affiliated Colleges.
  11. That is why;
    1. The University prescribes norms for infrastructure, qualifications and number of faculty, eligibility for admission of students, norms of admission of students on merit, curriculum, number of teaching days (at least 90 days per Semester), minimum number of hours for Class Room-teaching, Laboratory and Practical Work per week, attendance required (75%) for students to be eligible to appear at the University examination and for other matters for which a Conventional University ordinarily prescribes norms for its affiliated colleges.
    2. The University conducts examinations in a fair, strict and credible manner.
  12. Study Institutes which run Diploma Courses only are called Registered Study Institutes. Those which offer Degree and Post Graduate Courses are called Associated Study Institutes.
  13. The University registers or associates a Study Institute only if inspection by competent and trustworthy professionals finds it adhering to the prescribed norms or having potential to come up to these norms, within a reasonable period.
  14. Continued observance of prescribed norms is ensured through both regular and systematic inspections, and surprise inspections.
  15. Curricula for Courses of the University are designed and regularly updated jointly by eminent academics and professionals which have to be strictly followed by all Study Institutes and their students.
  16. To promote holistic development of the personality of the students, to provide a platform to nurture and present artistic, literary and sports talents and to develop a feeling of fraternity and camaraderie amongst the students of the University, inter-Study Institutes, inter-Zonal and National level cultural and sports meets are organised.

The University continues to make innovations in its curricula, methods of teaching and evaluation in pursuit of excellence.
The University also conducts research degree programmes in the areas of Mass Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Electronic Media, Library & Information Science and Computer Science & Applications.
TEACHING METHODS
Innovative and latest teaching methods are adopted as teaching- learning methods. These include lectures, discussions, workshops, field visits and visits to media organizations, library consultation, internship in print and electronic media, PR Departments etc. A number of innovative curricula, teaching and evaluation methods have been devised. It is mandatory for the students to accept changes in curriculum, teaching methods and examination pattern.
MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION
Medium of Instruction is both Hindi and English and the students have the option to give examination either in Hindi or in English.
FACULTY-REGULAR AND GUEST
The University has well-qualified and competent teachers as its faculty members who either belong to the academics or to the professional area. The faculty members of the University are devoted to the cause of the all round development of the students. The University also invites experts of the related area to provide opportunity for its students to interact with these eminent professionals. The professionals are invited as a guest faculty and also to deliver extension lectures.
ADD ON COURSES
For meeting the demand of media industry and to develop the expertise of the students, the university has decided to offer add on courses of one semester duration to students. Interested students may apply in the concerned center and obtain a certificate after successful completion of these course. Course offered are ‘Economic Journalism’, ‘Sports Journalism’, ‘Video Production’, ‘Creative Communication’, ‘Animation’ and ‘Media Management’.
CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES FOR STUDENTS
The University organises cultural and literary activities for students. Students also participate in Inter-University competitions organised by the Association of Indian Universities and other bodies. Limited facilities of games and sports are also made available for the students. Under the National Service Scheme (N.S.S.), students are encouraged to participate in social work.
SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS
Along with regular teaching, the University also conducts co-curricular activities. The University conducts seminars and workshops regularly in collaboration with prestigious government and non government agencies. The different Centers for Media Studies also occasionally organise discussion on contemporary issues for the students
ASSOCIATED INSTITUTES
As an extension activity, the University has started an innovative scheme of association of Institutes for its IT and Media Courses.
MEDIA MAGAZINE
A quarterly bi-lingual magazine of review Media Mimansa is being brought out by the University as aforum for Media analysis and Review. Articles on various facets of Communication, contributed by eminent persons both from the academic, professional and media world are published in it. Seven issue of Media Mimansa have also been brought out.
FACILITIES
Makhanlal Chaturvedi Rashtriya Patrakarita Vishwavidyalaya has the best of facilities which a communication / Journalism / Information Technology educational institute can provide to its students to acquire theoretical knowledge with the skills. The University is also collaborating with well-known Newspaper and Media Organisations for conducting its programmes, which are practical and job-oriented.
LIBRARY AND DOCUMENTATION UNIT
The University has a well organised Library and Documentation Unit. The Library has more than ten thousands books on different subjects. All national and local newspapers, in Hindi and English, are subscribed for the library. It also subscribes to important national and international news magazines and professional journals in addition to international libraries like British newspaper clippings and files on various subjects are special features of its Documentation Unit. Library is kept open from 8.00 A.M. to 6.00 P.M.
 AUDIO & VIDEO PRODUCTION LAB
The University has its own studio for television and radio programme production. It has best of equipment with digital post production facilities. Students make use of this lab and get maximum hands-on experience and learn performing skills under the supervision of experienced faculties.
COMPUTER LAB
Each campus of the University has the facility of computer lab. In Bhopal each Center for Study has separate Computer Lab. The curriculum of each course has been developed in such a way that it is mandatory for the student to learn and practice all the essential applications of computer knowledge for their respective courses.
PRINTING LAB
The University has a printing press, DTP system and latest computer software. Students are given hands-on learning experience there. It also receives wire services of PTI and UNI. Students of various courses bring out lab journals using these facilities.
