Established in 2008, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the the urban setting of the small city of Thiruvananthapuram (population range of 250,000-499,999 inhabitants), Kerala. Officially accredited/recognized by the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, India, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram is a coeducational higher education institution. Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees in several areas of study. Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram (IISER-TVM) is dedicated to scientific research and science education of international standards. Traditionally, teaching has been segregated from research in undergraduate science curricula in our country. IISERs were established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, to bridge this dichotomy. IISER-TVM started functioning in August 2008. The institute aims to provide high quality education in modern science, integrating it with outstanding research at the undergraduate level itself, and develop a spirit of research cutting across disciplines. The faculty are engaged in research in the frontier areas of basic sciences, with a high degree of autonomy and creativity.

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram (IISER-TVM) is dedicated to scientific research and science education of international standards. Traditionally, teaching has been segregated from research in undergraduate science curricula in our country. IISERs were established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, to bridge this dichotomy. IISER-TVM started functioning in August 2008. The institute aims to provide high quality education in modern science, integrating it with outstanding research at the undergraduate level itself, and develop a spirit of research cutting across disciplines. The faculty are engaged in research in the frontier areas of basic sciences, with a high degree of autonomy and creativity.

The transit campus of the institute is located in the Computer Science building of the College of Engineering, Trivandrum. The permanent campus of 200 acres is under construction at Vithura, at the foothills of the Ponmudi hills, about 40km from Thiruvananthapuram, and a set of buildings got inaugurated by January 2016 and the classes for a batch of students will be held from the ensuing academic year. The site for the campus is blessed with rich greenery, three streams, a river running through it and a spectacular mountain backdrop. This serene and tranquil environment in the lap of the Western Ghats will be ideal for research and teaching.

IISER-TVM is an autonomous institution awarding five year BS-MS degree in addition to Ph.D. degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and inter-disciplinary areas. Student selection is highly competitive, with only KVPY fellows, students in the IIT-JEE merit list, and students in the top one per cent of the respective boards eligible to apply for BS-MS admissions. Fewer than ten percent of the Ph.D. applicants are accepted. The current faculty-student ratio is about 1:10. Both BS-MS and Ph.D. students receive fellowships subject to maintaining satisfactory academic progress. The institute hosts regular colloquia and lectures by distinguished scientists. Such events give students opportunities to meet and interact with world leaders in different scientific disciplines.

The institute has developed various facilities to promote education with a research aptitude. These include virtual classrooms, library, full-fledged laboratories and a computer centre. The library has an extensive collection of books, monographs and conference proceedings in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Computer Science, Humanities and interdisciplinary areas of science. The library’s electronic resources include bibliographic databases, full text databases, journals, archives, e-books, software, statistical packages, images and digital maps. The institute has state-of-the-art and well equipped laboratory facilities in chemistry, physics and biology. The computer laboratory for undergraduate students has over 50 workstations. A Linux cluster of 120 Nodes is also available for teaching and research. Many courses are available on the electronic learning environment MOODLE. The campus is served by a 100 Mbps internet connection provided by the National Knowledge Network Project, soon to be upgraded to 1 Gbps.

IISER-TVM is a fully residential institute. Separate hostel accommodation is provided for boys and girls. The institute has a fully functional multi-cuisine mess that is supervised by a student committee. The annual cultural festival “Ishya” and the student-run “Sopanam” magazine serve as forums for students to display and develop their artistic, literary and creative talents. The cultural club of the institute organizes various events throughout the academic year. Regular film screenings and sports competitions are also conducted. The institute offers ample opportunities for the holistic development of young scientists who, imbued with the spirit of scientific enquiry, will take up the mantle of scientific endeavour in the coming years and decades.
