OVERVIEW

Established in 2008, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the the urban setting of the small city of Thiruvananthapuram (population range of 250,000-499,999 inhabitants), Kerala. Officially accredited/recognized by the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, India, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram is a coeducational higher education institution. Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees in several areas of study. Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including as well as administrative services.

Welcome to IISER Thiruvananthapuram

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram (IISER-TVM) is dedicated to scientific research and science education of international standards. Traditionally, teaching has been segregated from research in undergraduate science curricula in our country. IISERs were established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, to bridge this dichotomy. IISER-TVM started functioning in August 2008. The institute aims to provide high quality education in modern science, integrating it with outstanding research at the undergraduate level itself, and develop a spirit of research cutting across disciplines. The faculty are engaged in research in the frontier areas of basic sciences, with a high degree of autonomy and creativity.

Institute

The transit campus of the institute is located in the Computer Science building of the College of Engineering, Trivandrum. The permanent campus of 200 acres is under construction at Vithura, at the foothills of the Ponmudi hills, about 40km from Thiruvananthapuram, and a set of buildings got inaugurated by January 2016 and the classes for a batch of students will be held from the ensuing academic year. The site for the campus is blessed with rich greenery, three streams, a river running through it and a spectacular mountain backdrop. This serene and tranquil environment in the lap of the Western Ghats will be ideal for research and teaching.

IISER-TVM is an autonomous institution awarding five year BS-MS degree in addition to Ph.D. degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and inter-disciplinary areas. Student selection is highly competitive, with only KVPY fellows, students in the IIT-JEE merit list, and students in the top one per cent of the respective boards eligible to apply for BS-MS admissions. Fewer than ten percent of the Ph.D. applicants are accepted. The current faculty-student ratio is about 1:10. Both BS-MS and Ph.D. students receive fellowships subject to maintaining satisfactory academic progress. The institute hosts regular colloquia and lectures by distinguished scientists. Such events give students opportunities to meet and interact with world leaders in different scientific disciplines.

The institute has developed various facilities to promote education with a research aptitude. These include virtual classrooms, library, full-fledged laboratories and a computer centre. The library has an extensive collection of books, monographs and conference proceedings in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Computer Science, Humanities and interdisciplinary areas of science. The library’s electronic resources include bibliographic databases, full text databases, journals, archives, e-books, software, statistical packages, images and digital maps. The institute has state-of-the-art and well equipped laboratory facilities in chemistry, physics and biology. The computer laboratory for undergraduate students has over 50 workstations. A Linux cluster of 120 Nodes is also available for teaching and research. Many courses are available on the electronic learning environment MOODLE. The campus is served by a 100 Mbps internet connection provided by the National Knowledge Network Project, soon to be upgraded to 1 Gbps.

IISER-TVM is a fully residential institute. Separate hostel accommodation is provided for boys and girls. The institute has a fully functional multi-cuisine mess that is supervised by a student committee. The annual cultural festival “Ishya” and the student-run “Sopanam” magazine serve as forums for students to display and develop their artistic, literary and creative talents. The cultural club of the institute organizes various events throughout the academic year. Regular film screenings and sports competitions are also conducted. The institute offers ample opportunities for the holistic development of young scientists who, imbued with the spirit of scientific enquiry, will take up the mantle of scientific endeavour in the coming years and decades.

BS-MS Programme

Course Structure

The barrier between the traditional disciplines are fast disappearing. Modern research problems span a wide range of areas. It helps to have basic training in a range of disciplines to succeed in modern research. Accordingly, IISER-TVM BS-MS curriculum is designed to be dominantly interdisciplinary.

The BS-MS programme is of 10 semester duration.
Each academic year has 2 semesters of roughly 16 weeks each
1. Varsha Semester:August-December
2. Vasanth Semester:January-May
The first 2 years(ie. the first 4 semesters) will consist of foundation courses common to all students.
3rd and 4th year courses will be specialized in one Major(Biology,Chemistry,Physics or Mathematics) and one or more Minors.The fifth year will be devoted to a thesis by research.

Post Doctoral Programme

The Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Thiruvanathapuram (IISER-TVM) invites applications from highly qualified young scientists holding Ph.D. in the areas of Biological, Chemical, Mathematical and Physical Sciences/Engineering/Technology for the Institute Postdoctoral Fellowships commencing on 1st August 2014.

Summary

The Institute Post-doctoral Fellowship (IPF) is a full-time, contractual, postdoctoral position for highly qualified young scientists to carry out research at IISER-TVM. The duration is for 2 years, extendable by up to one more year on the basis of performance. The Fellowship does not imply any commitment regarding any other position at IISER-TVM.
The Fellowship carries a remuneration of INR 40,000/- per month for the first two years and INR 45,000/- per month in the third year, with no other allowances. There will be a contingency grant of INR 75,000/- per year that may be used for consumables and attending conferences/workshops.
IPF may not be held concurrently with any other national or international fellowships. It is also not transferable to any other fellowship.

Eligibility

Candidates who have a Ph.D. degree in Biological, Chemical, Mathematical and Physical Sciences/Engineering/Technology and related areas as applicable are eligible to apply. Those who are in the final stages of their Ph.D. thesis submission are also eligible to apply.
(If selected, the candidate must have submitted the thesis at the time of joining IPF.)

- Curriculum Vitae containing personal bio-data, degrees earned with dates, and list of publications.
- Research Proposal (maximum 1,500 words) including details of the facilities at IISER-TVM to be utilised, and research groups/laboratories that the candidate would like to collaborate with.
- Best publications (maximum 3).
- Synopsis of the Ph.D. work.
