About us

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995. At present the Institute has eleven departments and five inter-disciplinary academic centres covering all the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines, offering BTech, BDes, MA, MDes, MTech, MSc and PhD programmes. Within a short period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able
to build up world class infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments.Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati’s campus is on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 kms. from the heart of the city. With the majestic Brahmaputra on one side, and with hills and vast open spaces on others, the campus provides an ideal setting for learning.

History

On 18 March 2013, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India introduced a bill in the Parliament to establish 20 new Indian Institute of Information Technology’s in different parts of the Country. As per the bill, MHRD will establish the 20 new IIITs under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode partnering with respective state governments and industry partners. The new IIITs are envisaged to be Institutes of National Importance. Aimed at generating highly competent manpower of global standards for the Information Technology Industry, the institutes are also expected to act as major catalyst to develop new knowledge in the field of Information Technology.

Foundation

IIIT Guwahati was set up in 2013. The foundation stone for campus of IIIT Guwahati was unveiled in the presence of Hon’ble Prime Minister , Shri Narendra Modi .

Campus Infrastructure

​The Institute is operating from temporary premises at the Assam Textile Institute campus, in the heart of Guwahati city. The permanent campus is coming up in 70 acres of land about 4 km from the Guwahati airport. A map of the campus is here. Students and some faculty members are staying in a flat complex where 33 flats have been taken on rent by the Institute. The hostel complex is connected to the Institute by a wireless link and there is a wi-fi network in the complex.

Library Facilities

The IIIT-G library is stocked with books that cater to the student’s academic and research requirements. It fosters an atmosphere for academic learning and ensures a decorum of discipline, so that the students can concentrate their entire focus on learning. The E-library is currently being implemented

Laboratories Facilities

Labs are of immense importance to study core engineering subjects like computer science or electronics and communication. At IIITG , the labs are well equipped with state-of-the art equipments and latest hi-tech gadgets. The lab assistants are experienced and guide the students with competence through both curriculum and research work. The institution provides laptops to the students, which help them to carry out their tasks better and faster.

Internet Facilities

IIITG is a nascent institute and is rapidly developing. With the latest technology in action, we understand the importance of staying connected for the persuasion of knowledge and widening of vision. In accordance to those terms, the institute ensures to provide connectivity to all its inhabitants in every fringe of the campus throughout the 24 hours. IIITG has a well established network infrastructure both for the local (LAN) as well as access to high-speed internet.

Hostel Facilities

Life at the hostel is of utmost fun and frolic. The student hostel is situated in the vibrant Shine Heaven Colony. The students are accomodated in 3BHK apartments, with each room shared amongst two students. Each apartment has a common living room, kitchen and two balconies. The spacious accomodations are provided with 24-hour power backup supply, lift-service and high-speed internet connection. The institute also provides a laptop to each student, to help them complete their academic work or to u

se them to their own leisure.

Dining Facilities

There are mess facilities in the hostels as well as at college. Canteens are present to provide students with fresh and nutritious food. They cater to the need of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian students. There are appropriate and fixed timings for dining in hostels.

Sports Facilities

A healthy mind resides in a healthy body. Sports and games are a major aspect of complete development both physically and mentally for a person. In this competitive age, sports is equally essential to supplement and enhance the academic development. The students at IIITG indulge in a number of sporting activities like basketball, football, badminton, etc…. which inculcate in them a spirit to participate, compete and win.

Academics

Programs

IIITG offers B.Tech degree in Computer science and engineering and Electronics and communication engineering.  Admission to all these programs are through JEE-MAIN.

From 2015 onwards students enrolled in the research Doctoral Programme (awarding a Ph.D) after either completing a B.Tech degree or an M.Tech one.

IIIT Guwahati houses the following departments:

The first Batch of IIITG is graduating in summer 2017. which consist mainly two Department ECE an

d CSE of B.Tech program. Placement session has been started and the firms will start visiting for campus drive from the first week of December-2016. in the meanwhile the respected firms can contact to the Placement Cell of IIIT Guwahati.
