Overview
Founded in 1983, Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya (Guru Ghasidas University) is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the the rural setting of the large city of Bilaspur (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants), Chhattisgarh. Officially accredited/recognized by the University Grants Commission, India, Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya (GGU) is a very large (enrollment range: 35,000-39,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya (GGU) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. GGU also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, as well as administrative services.

History
Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya established as 9th state university of undivided Madhya Pradesh on 16 June 1983 by an Act of the State Legislative Assembly. The university is named to honor the great Satnami Saint Guru Ghasidas (1756–1850), who championed the cause of the downtrodden and waged a relentless struggle against all forms of social evils and injustice prevailing in the society. GGU became a Central University of India under Central Universities Act 2009, No. 25 of 2009 with the name of Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya.

It has taken from Uttarakanda of Sri Ramchritmanas after Doha number 118 (B).

Department of Forestry, Wildlife & Environmental Sciences
The Department of Forestry, Wildlife & Environmental Sciences was established in the year 1989. It is dedicated for promoting excellence in education and research in Forestry and allied subjects, to cater the need for trained forestry manpower in the country. The syllabi include study of all segments of forestry, wildlife and environmental sciences with a view to provide the students with innovative knowledge and skills. The Department organizes lectures by eminent persons besides workshops, seminars, symposium, and conferences in the field of forestry. Excursions to premier institutes of forestry, plantation areas, natural forest, forest nurseries and forest based industries are the regular features of the curriculum to understand the subject in a better way. The Department is actively engaged in research and extension programmes through a number of research/ developmental projects sanctioned by various Government funding agencies viz; ICFRE, MoEF, CCOST, DoLR. The Department has a good liaison with State Forest Department, forest based industries, research institutions and NGOs for the attachment of students to provide better exposure of the practical/ field operations in forestry and also to facilitate the new vistas for training and placement of students. The core objective of these programmes is to provide a bigger catchment and platform for natural/life sciences and agriculture sciences students to choose a professional degree in forestry.

Research areas
The Department is engaged in conducting research in following thrust areas: Forest tree improvement and tree mutagenesis; Watershed management through RS & GIS; Environment Impact Assessment; Bioremediation and restoration of degraded lands; Nutrient dynamics in tropical forest ecosystem; Mycorrhizal and Actinomycorrhizal symbiosis; Screening, characterization and bioprospecting of natural dyes; Wood improvement through novel technologies and Wildlife ecology.
Department of Rural Technology & Social Development
The Department of Rural Technology & Social Development was established in the year 2001 with an aim to carry out teaching & research activities for overall development of rural artisans. The indigenous knowledge of the rural people has been utilized by the department for creation of need-based technologies for sustainable rural development. Presently, the department runs professional and job oriented Bachelor, Master and Doctoral Degree courses related to Rural Technology approved by University Grants Commission, New Delhi. The primary motive behind running these courses, is to facilitate appropriate development of science and need-based technology for rural areas.
The department runs in its existing building with constructed area of 543 square meter and has an extension with constructed area of 869 square meter to be furnished in near future. The department has established new EDUSAT classroom and successfully organized two training programs last year jointly with Institute of Remote Sensing- Dehradun. Several advanced scientific instruments are available in the department, which have been used in research as well as in conducting project work of undergraduate and post graduate students. New Accelerated Solvent equipment (ASE 150) has been installed for innovative research in the field of medicinal plants. New remote sensing GIS software ERDAS 2011, ArcPAD, and 21st century GIS were purchased for remote sensing laboratory work and research. The Department is well versed with seven permanent faculty members having diversified academic qualifications and research experience. Many of them have experience of working at foreign research and academic institutions and well aquanted with international scientific trends. They are continuously publishing their research findings in journals of good impact factor. The department has set collaborations with several national and foreign academic and research institutions for teaching, learning, research and development. The department has furnished laboratories working on plant extraction, herbal drug formulations and their safety evaluation as well as has demonstration units for Vermicomposting, Biocomposting, Apiculture, Sericulture, Lac production and Mashroom production. Currently, two major research projects are running in the department sponsored by Chhattisgarh Council of Science and Technology, Raipur and Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi respectively. About 1500 books of national and international authors are available for students to facilitate teaching, learning and high quality research. All the advanced communication media are used by faculty members for advanced teaching. In the master’s degree programme, six months project work is compulsory. The students complete their project work in reputed educational and research institutions, like Indian Institute of Remote Sensing- Dehradun; Patanjalee Vishwavidyalaya- Haridwar; Indian Institute of Integrated Medicine- Jammu; National Botanical Research Institute- Lucknow; Centre of Science for Villages- Wardha; Birla Institute of Technology- MESRA, Ranchi; Deendayal Shodh Sansthan- Chitrakut; and Centre of Bio-Genetics Research- Bhopal.
Institute of Technology
Institute of Technology, Guru Ghasidas University, shortly known as IT-GGV. It was established in 1997 with the aim to create professionally competent manpower in the field of engineering and technology. Admission is done on the basis of merit obtained by the candidate in national-level entrance exam JEE-main, conducted by CBSE, New Delhi, followed by a counselling done by CSAB. The college provides four-year undergraduate and two-year postgraduate degrees in engineering. The academic departments of this institute are:

Department of Law (School of Law) UTD
The School of Law is one of the newest departments in the University established in 2012. It develops professional skills of persons intending to make a career in advocacy, judicial service, law officer and legislative drafting. There are compulsory core subjects, language subjects, compulsory law subjects and optional law subjects.
The department has its own library, which has AIR From 1924 – 2012, AIR Manual-Civil/Criminal 2004-Vol 1-Vol 25 6th Edition, Chhattisgarh Law Judgment 2001-2010, Corporate law Advisor, Chhattisgarh state and central law times from 2004 to present, Indian bar Review, Labour and Industrial Cases from 2004 to present, M.P High court today from 2000 to present, The M.P. Law times from 1960 to present, and Supreme Court Cases from 1960 to present.
The department offers two five-year integrated programs, the BA LLB and the B.Com LLB courses. There are ten semesters, two semesters per year. Students are admitted through the VET(Vishwavidhyalaya entrance test).
