The Master of Philosophy is a special program aimed at developing the student’s research acumen and teaching abilities in his field of specialization. This degree confers official standing as a certified doctoral candidate. Although, admission into the M. Phil. Program is generally seen as a constituency candidacy for the Ph.D., it is actually a pre-requisite for official acceptance into the doctoral program, and is the terminal degree for students who do not proceed to write a dissertation.
Admission
A candidate may be admitted to M.Phil. Program provided he/she possesses the minimum eligibility and also qualifies for the program as per the merit list prepared on the basis of Combined Entrance Test (CET) conducted by the University as per rules.
Eligibility
Master Degree in relevant subject with at least 55% marks (50% marks in case of SC/ST/OBC candidates).
Seats
The basic unit will be that of 20 seats. Multiples of this unit can also be set up.
Duration of Course
The duration of M.Phil. Program will be 1 year (3 semesters i.e. 1st semester – course work, 2nd and 3rd semester – dissertation work). Maximum time duration for completion of the program will be 3 years.
Fees
The fees payable by a candidate shall be such as may be fixed by the University time to time, subject to any direction from the Government of Chhattisgarh/UGC thereon.
Attendance
Candidates appearing as regular students for any semester examination shall be required to have attendance at least 75% provided that a short fall in attendance up to 5% can be condoned by the Vice-Chancellor of University for satisfactory reasons.
Examination and Evaluation
There shall be two University examinations each year- The first around December/January and the second May/June.
A candidate failing in more than two courses (Subject) either theory or practical in semester examination shall be treated as fail.
A candidate who fails to obtain minimum marks/grades in not more than two theory papers/practical/viva-voce at any of the semester examination shall be declared to have obtained A.T.K.T. (allowed to keep term). Such candidate may be admitted provisionally to the class for the next higher semester. In case he/she fails to clear the backlog in the A.T.K.T. examination (in two attempts) he/she shall be treated as fail. The candidate failing in the final (2nd) semester examination may seek re-admission in the semester, however he/she shall submit his/her dissertation after necessary improvement and/or modifications return dissertation on a different topic suggested by the head/supervisor of the department in the University.
Dissertation thesis should be accomplished with at least one published research paper (In Journals/conference/ seminars/etc.)
Thesis will be examined by external examiner.
Minimum pass marks for each subject in each semester shall be as under:
- Each course (Theory + Assignment) will be 40%.
- Each practical (Exam + viva-voce) will be 50%.
- Dissertation (Thesis + viva-voce) will be 50%.
- Total aggregate in each semester will be 50%.
In case of short of aggregate, candidates are free to appear in one theory or practical examination to fulfill the aggregate.
Award of class or Division
Class or division to a candidate is decided by the percentage of marks as per the following:
- Distinction with Honors 75%≤ Marks ≤ 100%
- Class I (first Division) 60% ≤ Marks < 75%
- Class II (Second Division) 50% ≤ Marks < 60%
Revaluation and Award of Grace Marks
The candidate may apply to the Registrar for revaluation of his/her answer book in the prescribed form within 15 days from the declaration of the result of the regular examination. The revaluation of the answer book will not be applicable for back log papers; provided that no candidate shall be allowed to avail the facility of revaluation in more than two papers. Moreover, no revaluation shall be allowed in case of scripts of practicals, field work, sessional work test and thesis submitted in line of paper at examination.
The vice-chancellor shall award one grace mark to the candidate who is either failing or missing the division by one mark. However, it will not be added anywhere.
Guidelines for Dissertation work
The second semester is the Dissertation work Semester. During this semester the candidate shall devote himself for the research work in connection with any of the aspects of his/her relevant subject assigned to him by the supervisor concerned in the University. A supervisor shall not have, at any given point of time, more than five M.Phil. scholars. At the end of the semester the candidate shall submit 03 typed copies of the Dissertation thesis written by him, to the University through the Principal/Director/Head of the Dept. of the University, accompanied by the certificate for the Head of the Department and the Supervisor; to the effect that it embodies actual work carried by the candidate and that the work has not been submitted earlier in part or full for the award of any other degree.

Structure of Entrance Examination
The entrance exam for admission to M.Phil. program consists of one theory paper of 100 marks having two sections. The duration of examination will be of 2 hours.
Section I contains 40 questions (multiple choices) to assess the candidate’s general awareness, verbal ability, quantitative ability, data interpretation, analysis, synthesis, reasoning, basics of computing and research aptitude (40 marks).
Section II consisting of 30 questions (multiple choices) to assess the candidates capability of defining certain concepts & knowledge from the relevant discipline in which he/she seeks registration as indicated in application form (60 marks).
Ph.D. & Research Programmes
Dr. C.V. Raman University offers Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program through various disciplines. Award of Ph.D. degree will be made on basis of academic achievements in research work and published work as well as the papers presented in seminars, conferences etc.
The University also encourages interdisciplinary areas through a system of co-supervision and provides excellent opportunities for such programs. The research work shall be original work, characterized either by the discovery of facts or by a fresh approach towards the interpretation and application of facts. It shall demonstrate the candidate’s capacity for critical examination, sound judgment and shall represent the original contribution to the existing knowledge.
The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is granted for research work in areas recognized by the academic departments of the University. The degree will be awarded in the discipline of the department in which the candidate is registered.

Eligibility
A candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy must, at the time of application, hold Master’s degree with at least 55% marks (50% marks in case of SC/ST/PH/VH/category candidates)or an equivalent grade of Deemed University or any other University incorporated by any law for the time being in force and recognized by the University.
Provided that the candidate who has at least 7 years of experience of research/teaching/industry may be permitted to get registered for Ph.D degree, even if he/she does not possess 55% marks at Master degree.
However candidate possessing less than 50% marks at Post Graduate level notwithstanding, anything mentioned above paragraph will not be eligible for Ph.D. registration in the University.
Admission
Application form for Ph.D Program must be submitted in the prescribed form at the office of the University on or before the due date declared by University. The short-listed candidates will be intimated for interview as per rules.
