The Central University of Jammu came into existence on August 08, 2011, with the appointment of the first Vice-Chancellor. It was established by the Central Universities Act, 2009 (Act No.25 of 2009 read with the Central Universities Act, 2009).
The first academic session (2011-2012) commenced with three Post Graduate courses in English, Economics and Applied Mathematics at Temporary Academic Block-I (TAB-I) at Sidhra bypass road, Jammu. In the next academic session (2012-2013),five PG Courses were added: Computer Science, Educational Studies, Environmental Sciences, Human Resource Management and Travel & Tourism Management in Temporary Academic Block (TAB-II) at Sainik Colony Extension. Since the third session (2013-2014) all the departments are functioning from TAB at Sainik Colony. Four new post graduate courses were introduced in the academic session (2014-2015): National Security Studies; Public Policy & Public Administration; Social Work and Mass Communication & New Media. The University also offers Integrated M-Phil-Ph.D programme in eight subjects.
The University carries out its administrative functions from its head office at Bagla, Rahya-Suchani, Distt. Samba.
The Central University of Jammu campus is under construction at Village Bagla, Raya Suchani in District Samba, which is at an approximate distance of 25 kms from Jammu.
Jammu city is the largest city of the Jammu region situated at the banks of the popular river Tawi.It isalso the winter capital of the Jammu & Kashmir state. Owing to the large number of historical temples located within the city, it is also known as the City of Temples.The city is well connected with other cities by air, train and road.
Established in 2009, Central University of Jammu is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the the rural setting of the medium-sized city of Jammu (population range of 500,000-1,000,000 inhabitants), Jammu and Kashmir. Officially accredited/recognized by the University Grants Commission, India, Central University of Jammu (CUJ) is a coeducational higher education institution. Central University of Jammu (CUJ) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees in several areas of study. CUJ also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, as well as administrative services.
The city derives its name from Raja Jambulochan, the founder of the city. It is believed that during one of his hunting campaigns, he saw a goat and a lion drinking water at the same place. The Raja was amazed, abandoned the idea of hunting and returned to his companions. Recounting what he had seen, he exclaimed that this place, where a lion and a lamb could drink water side by side, was a place of peace and tranquillity. The Raja commanded that a palace be built at this place and a city was founded around it.
The Tourism is the largest industry in Jammu. Millions of devotees visit Jammu in connection with the holy pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devishrine and is also a base for the holy Amar Nathyatra. It is also a focal point for the visitors to Kashmir valley and other parts of the Jammu & Kashmir state as it is second last railway terminal in North India. All the routes leading to Kashmir, Poonch, Doda, Bhaderwah, Katra and Laddakh start from Jammu city. The city witnesses tourists from various parts of the country throughout the year.The places of interest for sightseeing at Jammu include old historic places like Amar Mahal, Mubarak Mandi,Bahu Fort, Raghunath Temple, Ranbireshwar Temple, Peer Kho, Mahamaya temple and many more. Jammu has a large number of mosques, shrines, gurudwaras and churches as well. The city also has a number of shopping places, fun parks, etc.

The library has a computer lab with 24X7 Wi-Fi facilities for research scholars and students.
