Founded in 1781, Aliah University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the the urban setting of the metropolis of Kolkata (population range of over 5,000,000 inhabitants), West Bengal. Officially accredited/recognized by the University Grants Commission, India, Aliah University is a coeducational higher education institution formally affiliated with the Islamic religion. Aliah University offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees in several areas of study. Aliah University also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, as well as administrative services.
Aliah University (Bengali: আলিয়া বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, informally known as AU), is a state government controlled minority autonomous university in New Town, West Bengal, India. Previously known as Mohammedan College of Calcutta, it was elevated to university in 2008. It offers multiple modern day professional undergraduate and postgraduate programs in different Engineering, Arts, Science and Management subjects respectively. Professor Abu Taleb Khan is its present vice chancellor.
Apart from these courses Aliah University offers professional courses viz. 5 year integrated M Sc in Computer Science (3-year B Sc(H) + 2-year M Sc), 5 year integrated MCA (3-year BCA(H) + 2-year MCA), 5 year integrated MBA (3-year BBA(H) + 2-year MBA ( with specialization in HR, Marketing, Hospital Management, Retail Management, Systems & Finance) and 2 Year M Sc in Media Science (Journalism & Mass communication).

Admission
Admission to most undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Aliah University is granted through written entrance examinations. Admission to M.S. and Ph.D. programmes is based primarily on a personal interview, though candidates have to take written tests as well. But Ph.D programme is open to all, not only for the Aliah Universities students.
Admission to undergraduate programmes is based on merit rank of the “Aliah University Admission Test” (AUAT), which consists of a written examination of multiple choice type questions (MCQ), clearing of which leads to an interview and final selection of the candidate. Candidates who qualify for admission through AUAT can apply for admission to LLM. ( Masters of Law ), B.Tech. (Bachelor of Technology), Integrated MBA (Master of Business Administration), Integrated MCA (Master of Computer Applications), Integrated M.Sc. (Master of Science) and Integrated M.A. (Master of Arts) courses in different Engineering, Business, Science and Arts subjects.Currently,Aliah University started M.Tech. (Master of Technology). But for now only the student who have completed their B.tech from Aliah University they are eligible to take admission here.
Campus
Aliah University has four campuses for different types of curriculum located at Park Circus, Taltala and New Town (Rajarhat).
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal laid the foundation stone of ‘Aliah University Campus’ at Rajarhat on 15 December 2011. Later on 11 November 2014 Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the finished campus. New Town campus contains 156 class rooms with a capacity of 12000 students and houses Science and Technology students only. The campus also has separate boy’s and girl’s hostel currently under construction. New Town campus also has three annexure buildings dedicated for various laboratories and a central library. University library
Aliah University has three libraries in its three different campuses.All of them the library of Newtown Campus has a central library including 1.33lac books.
Aliah University has a library rich in collection of literature in Islamic Theology, Islamic Jurisprudence & Law, and Arabic.
The library is now diversifying in the areas of Science, Engineering, Management Science, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Controversy and criticism
In 2016 a series of protests by the students of the University took place on the main campus(Rajarhat, New Town) against the disordering principle of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Abu Taleb Khan; because students were experiencing lack of books in library, lack of faculty, bad condition of lab etc. from the beginning of the University. The protest began on 8 Nov. 2016. On 18 Nov, 2016 tudents insulted their VC Prof. Abu Taleb Khan giving a black rose to him. They blockaded the main gates of the University and the students made a loud slogan. With the help of police and security guards of the University, the VC entered in his office.
Students were requested by the EC members, Fact Finding Committee, and also the Minority and Madrasah Education Minister Giasuddin Molla to stop the protest and class boycotts. But students said they will continue to boycott classes until the Vice Chancellor resigns.

Social Science and Religious Studies from a recognized University/Institute with minimum 55% marks (or a CGPA of 6.0 in 10 point scale) in the qualifying exams shall be considered for admission in the departments as per their specialization only
Eligibility Criteria
A Master’s degree in the concerned or allied subject from a UGC recognized university/institute or such other degree as may be considered adequate for this purpose by this university, with at least a CGPA of 6.0 in 10-point scale or 55% marks
For Engineering Dept.: Candidates possessing Masters Degree in the area of Engineering from a recognized University/Institute with minimum 60% marks (or CGPA of 6.5 in 10 point scale) in the qualifying exams shall be considered for admission in the departments as per their specialization only
For Science Dept. Candidates possessing Masters Degree in the area of Science from a recognized University/Institute with minimum 55% marks (or a CGPA of 6.0 in 10 point scale) in the qualifying exams shall be considered for admission in the departments as per their specialization only
For Humanities, Social Science and Religious Studies Depts.: Candidates possessing Masters Degree in the area of Humanities, Social Science and Religious Studies from a recognized University/Institute with minimum 55% marks (or a CGPA of 6.0 in 10 point scale) in the qualifying exams shall be considered for admission in the departments as per their specialization only

Log on to the university website http://www.aliah.ac.in and click on the link admission to PhD program 2015; read the eligibility criteria carefully before starting your application process
Fees for the application is Rs.450/- for eachsubject; applying in a subject you are not eligible for will only cause your application to be rejected and application fee will not be refunded
Candidates filling the online application can pay the application fee through online payment
Submission of application: Confirmation sheet generated at the time of applying online is to be submitted; applicant is to send testimonials (self-attested) in support of age, qualifications (mark sheets), experience (if any), fee receipt (if any) along with the filled-in “Confirmation sheet” in a sealed envelope (super-scribing name of the dept applied for) to the Deputy Registrar, Aliah University, 6th Floor, DN-18, Sector-V, Salt Lake, Kolkata-700091 latest by 15th October till 04.00 pm
