Banaras Hindu University commonly referred to as BHU; formerly known as Central Hindu College is a public central university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It was established in 1916 by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya. It is the only university which has IIT in its campus named IIT (BHU). BHU is organized into 6 institutes and 14 faculties (streams) and more than 132 departments. Total student enrolment at the university exceeds 30000, and includes students from over 34 nations.
The university offers several courses at undergraduate, postgraduate and research level. Admission is done on the basis of marks obtained in Undergraduate Entrance Test (UET) for UG courses, Postgraduate Entrance Test (PET) for PG courses, Research Entrance Test (RET) for Ph.D and M.Phil Entrance Test for M.Phil.
- In case of SC/ST candidates, there will be no requirement for minimum percentage of marks in the qualifying examination except that they must have passed the qualifying examination & appeared in the concerned Entrance Test
- For OBC and PC candidates there will be a relaxation of 5% marks in aggregate in the qualifying examination in minimum eligibility requirements, in comparison to general category candidates.

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) offers degree, diploma, and certificate courses to candidates at UG, PG, and PhD levels. Courses offered are in the streams of Humanities & Social Sciences, Accounting & Commerce, Science, Teaching & Education, Arts (Fine/ Visual/ Performing), Law, Mass Communication & Media, IT & Software, Hospitality & Travel, and Business & Management Studies. It may be noted that the university also offers different vocational courses to candidates in subject areas such as Retail & Logistics Management, Food Processing & Management, etc.
Minimum Eligibility Criteria for UG & PG Courses
All candidates who have cleared Class XII from a recognised board with the minimum required percentage as prescribed by BHU are eligible for UG course admissions at the university. All candidates who possess a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university with the minimum prescribed percentage meet BHU eligibility criteria for PG course admissions.
Note: Aspirants are advised to go through the eligibility criteria as mentioned by BHU for the course in which they wish to secure admission.
Admission Process for UG & PG Courses
The varsity conducts different entrance exams to provide admission to candidates in UG and PG courses offered by it. For admission in all UG courses, the varsity conducts BHU UET exam. Also, for admission in all PG courses, the university conducts BHU PET exam.
However, the exception is for MBA and MBA (IB) course admissions for which the university accepts CAT scores. BHU admission process for MBA and MBA (IB) courses is such that after appearing for CAT candidates need to appear for a Group Discussion and Personal Interview (GDPI) round followed by a counselling session.
For admission in Biotechnology course, the university accepts JNU CEEB scores.
Besides offering regular courses at UG and PG level, BHU also offers some Special Courses of Study (SCS) to candidates. Programmes included under SCS category are basically diploma and certificate courses where admission is done on the basis of merit. The merit list is prepared by the varsity on the basis of candidates’ marks scored in the last qualifying examination. Admission process for SCS courses is such that candidates need to appear for a counselling session after the merit list is out. However, for some courses, candidates might also be called for interview/ entrance test by the concerned department of the university, informs the official website.
Application Process for UG & PG Courses
For Banaras Hindu University registrations, candidates need to fill the application form in the online mode on the entrance test portal of the varsity. After BHU application form is duly-filled and submitted, candidates can pay the application fee in the online mode (credit/ debit card) or offline mode (Challan payable at any branch of HDFC Bank).
Application fee: Rs 500 (Rs 250 for SC/ ST/ PC candidates)
It may be noted that candidates can also apply for more than one course at BHU by filling separate application forms. The application fee charged for each subsequent application form (after first application) is as per the reduced rates mentioned below:

Application Process for MBA and MBA (IB) Courses
Candidates can fill BHU application form for MBA and MBA (IB) course admissions in the offline mode. For this candidates need to download the application form from the official website of Institute of Management Studies. The duly-filled application form along with all necessary documents as prescribed by the institute need to be submitted to the Dean of Institute of Management Studies, BHU.
Along with the form, candidates also need to submit BHU application fee via demand draft (DD) drawn in favour of the Registrar, Banaras Hindu University, payable at Varanasi.
Candidates can download admit card from the entrance test portal of BHU by entering their unique registration ID allotted to them at the time of submission of online application form.
Note that it is mandatory for candidates to carry admit at the allotted exam centre.

International Student Admissions
Banaras Hindu University provides admission to foreign nationals in different UG, PG, Diploma, and PhD courses offered by it on the basis of merit determined through candidates’ performance in the qualifying examination.
However, it may be noted that “all applicants for UG or PG medical courses are required to apply at the Indian embassies in their respective countries. If found fit and seats being available, their admissions are approved by the Ministry of Health and the forms are forwarded to BHU for the purpose of admissions,” informs the official website.
It may also be noted that all foreign candidates applying for undergraduate engineering courses such as B Tech, IDD or IMD need to apply through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main. Only candidates clearing the entrance exam will be considered for admission at BHU.
Application Form for Foreign Students
International/ foreign candidates can apply at BHU under two categories:
Self-financing: All self-financing foreign candidates can fill BHU application form in the offline mode. For this, candidates can download the application form from the official website of International Centre, BHU. Candidates can also collect the form personally from the International Centre of BHU, Varanasi.
Once the application form is duly-filled, candidates need to send it to the Office of the International Centre, Banaras Hindu University. Along with the form candidates also need to submit all required documents/ certificates (as prescribed by the university) and a demand draft of the processing/ application fee.
Scholarship schemes: All candidates seeking scholarship schemes for BHU admissions need to fill the application form of ICCR available at the Indian embassy of their respective countries. Along with the form, candidates also need to submit all required documents/ certificates as prescribed by ICCR. If admission and scholarship is offered to such candidates, the same will be communicated to them by the Indian Embassy of their respective countries.
