Ten thousands seats of medical PG(MD-MS) may increase, district residency plan will start
From the next academic session, there may be an increase of about 10,000 seats for PG (MD and MS) in medicine. The Medical Council of India (MCI) is going to start the District Residency Scheme from next year to address the shortage of doctors in district hospitals. Under this, it can be decided to increase PG seats.
MCI’s Board of Governors has prepared a district residency plan to overcome the shortage of doctors in district hospitals. Under this, all PG students of medicine will have to serve in the district hospital for three months to get the eligibility for obtaining the degree. The scheme has also been approved in principle by both the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Health and Family Welfare Council.

In the last November, the Center had a meeting with the states in this regard. During this time some states had expressed apprehension that if the scheme is implemented, the services in the hospitals associated with the medical college could be adversely affected during the stay of medical students. Because medical students also play a big role in providing services.
Addressing the apprehension of the states, the Board of Governors has decided that the more PG seats a medical college send to serve as many PG students as it can in district hospitals. However, a formal application will have to be made to the concerned medical colleges. Talking to Hindustan, a senior MCI official said that according to an estimate, if all the medical colleges take interest in it, then about 10,000 seats of PG will increase. At present, there are about 42 thousand seats of Medical PG in the country.
